Happy National Thrift Store Day!

Not surprisingly, we love a thrift store bahgain. We’re not sure why someone no longer needed those perfectly lovely white Prada loafers, but we won’t complain.  To celebrate National Thrift Store Day, we’ll be heading to some of our favorite Jamaica Plain stores ( Boomerangs and Goodwill, hoorah!). But before we do, here are our top 4 tips to incorporate thrift store shopping in to both wedding preparation and celebration!

1. Bring a friend. Friends help you keep your budget, nix those one-of-a-kind objects “you just know you will use”, and swoop in on finds you’d miss otherwise. Thank goodness for these wise women!

2. Put on your game face and a smart outfit. If you’ll be shopping for clothes, wear a base layer its simple to try other clothes on over. We recommend a tank top, and then leggings and  either wearing your own, or finding, a skirt with an elastic waist band. This outfit will  double as a dressing room. Thrift stores have notoriously too few dressing rooms, and we’ve been saved many times by trying on shorts, pants, etc. underneath said loose, flowing skirt. Like this one!

3. Focus on the details. Thrift stores are great places to find things for centerpieces or favors. The cost of the “little things” can really add up, and you don’t need to blow your budget on the types of things folks love to give away!  Head to your favorite thrift store for things like picture frames, vases, mason jars, baskets, spools of ribbon, greeting cards you can refashion… the inventory is the limit. We love how Mary, who blogs at Diary of a Thrift Store Addict, incorporated her thrift store finds in to her engagement photo below:

4. Know the sales. Learn the code in your neighborhood thrift store. When is the gold tag, white tag, red tag, blue tag sale? Who gets a discount on Tuesday, and who do you know who fits that bill? When is their $1 bag sale?  Sign up for newsletters and visit when the deals are the best.

How have you incorporated thrift store shopping in to your wedding?
